Researchers Developed Green Extraction for Ginkgo Flavonoids
A new process efficiently extracts beneficial plant compounds while reducing potentially harmful ginkgolic acids.
Updated on Sept. 22, 2026 in Nutrition

Scientists have engineered a new liquid-liquid extraction method for Ginkgo biloba that isolates flavonoids while simultaneously removing toxic ginkgolic acids. This green processing technique utilizes specialized deep eutectic solvents to improve purity and efficiency.
Why it matters
The development of this green, efficient processing method aims to improve the quality of Ginkgo biloba products. By refining extraction, it addresses the challenge of balancing high yields of beneficial compounds with the necessary reduction of unwanted ginkgolic acids.
Using computational screening of 80 solvents, researchers identified a combination that reached a maximum flavonoid yield of 10.06 mg/g. The study utilized molecular dynamics simulations and scanning electron microscopy to validate the efficiency of the new extraction mechanism.
The details
The method employs two types of solvents to separate the desired components from the plant material. Hydrophilic solvents containing Methyl-beta-cyclodextrin and 1,4-butylene Glycol selectively pull the flavonoids into the mixture. Simultaneously, a hydrophobic blend of oleic acid and lauryl alcohol captures and removes ginkgolic acids, which are often undesirable due to potential toxicity.
Health Landscape
This development contributes to the ongoing evolution of botanical processing, moving away from harsh synthetic solvents toward greener, more selective alternatives. It sits within a broader scientific effort to improve the safety and purity of supplements derived from complex plant materials.
This research is an upstream process improvement and does not immediately change how you should use existing Ginkgo biloba supplements. If you are considering adding any supplement to your health routine, it is essential to discuss it with your physician to screen for potential interactions.
The takeaway
This new chemical method demonstrates how cleaner extraction techniques can boost the purity of plant-based supplements. When selecting health products, always look for reputable brands that utilize transparent, high-quality manufacturing standards as discussed with your doctor.
